Thanks to the city’s compact size and cooling breeze from the surrounding hills, sightseeing on foot is a pleasurable experience in Kandy.
Many visitors make a beeline for the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth, believed to hold one of the most sacred relics in Buddhism - a tooth of the Buddha. While the tooth is kept shrouded in a gold casket, you can visit the room where it’s kept, as well as various other shrines, museums and temples within the complex. Once you’ve explored the temple, spend some time meandering around Kandy Lake. This picturesque water body is in fact man-made and was built in 1807 by one of the last kings to rule the Kingdom of Kandy. As you stroll along the scenic shores, take a seat on one of the waterfront benches and simply watch the world go by.
Another highlight is the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens, located just outside of Kandy. These stunning gardens are home to an impressive variety of exotic plant life, including orchids, an avenue of royal palms, towering bamboo trees and a huge Javan fig tree. Keep your eyes peeled for the resident monkeys and fruit bats.
If you fancy practicing your putting skills, the Victoria Golf Club is one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic courses. When you’re not perfecting your swing, the resort offers horse riding, cycling and ayurvedic massages for non-golfers.

The Temple of the Tooth, located inside the former royal residence of the Kandy kings, is said to house the tooth of the Buddha. What’s so special about that, you might ask? Well, not only does this ancient relic symbolise the foundations of Buddhism, but legend has it that whoever possess the tooth has the right to rule the country. In other words, it’s a pretty big deal.Discover more
