Vine hopping is what it’s all about. Whether you aim to see two vineyards, or six, the hop-on hop-off system of Stellenbosch’s Vine Hopper will allow you to spend as much or little time on each farm as you want.
Suitably wined and dined, why not try a guided waterfall hike in Jonkershoek Nature Reserve? A UNESCO world heritage site, Jonkershoek, besides sitting pretty, has an important role to play. This nature reserve provides water to Stellenbosch and its surrounding areas, as well as being home to a number of rare mammals. Leopards, honey badgers, baboons and mongoose can all be found here – but keep your eyes peeled because they’re generally fairly camera shy.
Head to nearby Betty’s Bay along Clarence Drive however, and you’ll definitely capture the creature’s at large here. Stony Point Penguin Colony rivals Boulder’s Beach as another of South Africa’s coastlines which penguins are known to frequent. And, the penguins aren’t all that are postcard-perfect in this neck of the woods. The Harold Porter Botanical Garden boasts Disa Kloof Waterfall, a beautiful natural spectacle that, along with the baboons and tortoises found here, will have you grabbing for your camera.
Back in Stellenbosch town, between browsing the boutique shops and galleries, Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden is the perfect setting in which to pause for a spot of tranquility. Free of charge, it’s definitely worth spending an hour here.
We’ve put together themed experience packs so that you can get the best out of your holiday. Are you all about the culture?
