If you’ve ever seen a picture of the Cape Winelands, it’s likely that it was taken in Stellenbosch. This historical university town is most famed for the wine produced in its surrounding vineyards, of which, there are hundreds – now this is a place where “dry January” is nigh on impossible.
But the vineyards aren’t all that’s thriving in Stellenbosch. A combination of students, locals and tourists make South Africa’s second oldest town quite the bustling hub. And, although it may only be beaten by Cape Town in the age stakes, much like the capital, Stellenbosch definitely doesn’t feel old, even if it looks it.
Founded by the Dutch in 1679, today a mixture of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture makes up the pretty oak-lined streets of this classic colonial settlement. Filled with an array of elegant boutiques, it’s the perfect place for a mooch. Or, if you want to delve a bit further into the history of the town, head to the Village Museum to learn about how Stellenbosch has developed over the centuries.
Dining in Stellenbosch is nothing short of a delicious affair. And, being just a short drive from Cape Town, it’s worth the trip for the gastronomic offerings alone – although it’s probably best to stay the night if you’ve got vineyard visits planned. From fine dining to rustic farm-to-table food, Stellenbosch has something for everyone’s tastes and, of course, all culinary concoctions will be expertly paired with the best of the region’s local wines.
This is a place where quality is guaranteed so sit back, relax and soak in its endless charms.
