It’s home to the dramatic slopes of the Drakensberg peaks, countless world-class hiking trails and a coast so wild that the very fact became its namesake – there are many draws to the Eastern Cape, but not much will beat its main event. Here, it’s all about safari and Kariega Game Reserve is one of the best.
With such a diverse topography, this is a province that epitomises the essence of South Africa: vast and varied. But, it’s in the area’s game reserves that you will find the landscapes most recognisable as the African bush that has so often graced your screens. Dotted with majestic giraffe and grazing buffalo, the ‘Planet Earth’ worthy scenes will see you making your best attempt – however subconsciously – at a David Attenborough-esque voice over, even before you head out on a game drive.
Rather than having to make the flight up to Kruger, the Eastern Cape’s private reserves are perfectly located for fitting in a safari at the end of your Garden Route travels – ideal for those trying to tick off South Africa’s highlights in a hurry. Plus, you’ll still see the sought-after Big Five AND there's no malaria. What’s not to love?
But remember: this is an experience where patience will pay off. So, cameras at the ready. You’re in for a treat.
Morning or afternoon. Day or night. Game drives are the top attraction.
Morning game drives usually mean crack of dawn starts, but as the age-old saying goes: the early bird catches the worm. Afternoons in the bush tend to still be baking from the midday sun. Witness elephants – unperturbed by the heat – chow down on the bush’s branches, whilst wild dogs take shelter under the shade of an accommodating tree. Come evening, the air is cooler and the light soft. Vultures feast on the remains of another predator’s unlucky victim. When night falls, watch bushbabies at large, fresh from their day’s slumber and look out for aardwolves sloping through the darkness.
