South Africa Base Itineraries

As Confucius said (or, at least, somebody very wise), you’ve got to start somewhere – and when you’re creating your South Africa holiday with Meraki Travel, you start with a base itinerary.

This base is where you get down to business. It includes the ‘You’d be mad to miss’ destinations in each region – you know, those places you simply must visit otherwise you’ll be kicking yourself once you get back.

When you’ve settled on your base South Africa itinerary, you can then tailor it to your exact requirements. Fancy adding new locations to your trip? Choose the Winelands for some world-class wine action. And if you change your mind – no worries. Just click to remove them from your South Africa travel itinerary until you’ve got it right.

If things are happening too fast, don’t worry - you can slow it down by changing the pace of your trip.  If 7 days isn’t enough, why not add more nights in the places that grab you most and extend your South Africa itinerary to 3 weeks? You can even choose accommodation options to suit your personal style (such as something with a bit more character) or your budget (go luxury for that blowout). Plus, you can add experiences to your whole trip based on your interests. Whether you’re a foodie, can’t sit still or want to spend a bit more time learning the local ways, we’ve got it covered. Just choose the Foodie Experience pack, Active pack or Cultural pack when you’re planning your holiday.

Once you’re happy with your trip, all you need to do is enter your dates, select your flights and then you can book up the whole thing – remember to book that annual leave!

If all that sounds like too many decisions in one session – choices, choices! – then just save your trip at any point and come back to it later. You can even create multiple trips to share with your significant other, so you can agree on the one that works for both of you. Simple really. And a lot of fun.

You might think Classic means safe. Or boring. But our Classic itinerary is anything but. To us, Classic means the best bits. All those highlights that you simply cannot miss.

This base package gives you seven nights to soak in the wild beauty of South Africa, but can be extended to ten if you go for the ‘relaxed’ pace option (this adds on two extra nights in Cape Town and one more night in Kruger). If you like your comfort, you're in luck – all the hotels are three star, with the option of upgrading in the itinerary builder if you want a bit more luxury.

What’s more, the Classic trip includes all the must-see experiences, such as a hop-on hop-off bus in Cape Town and multiple game drives in Kruger. Plus, to make this truly the trip of a lifetime, you can add on extras, including a helicopter ride to the Winelands for the ultimate tasting experience, or – if getting ‘Active’ is more your thing – you could opt for a guided hike to the top of Lion’s head for a picnic with a view.

All transport is covered, too; you get a private car and driver to escort you to all these locations. But if you want to take your trip that little bit further – and why wouldn’t you? – you can add Stellenbosch, Hermanus, Johannesburg and Mozambique to your list. What’s not to love?

Sound like the thing for you? Start designing your holiday now using the Classic as your base itinerary.

Garden Route (self-drive) ITINERARY

Summary: A road trip to remember, our Garden Route itinerary allows you to soak up Cape Town’s urban cool and abundance of natural icons before tracing one of the most picturesque coastal routes in the world.

Duration: 7 Nights: Cape Town 4nts, Oudtshoorn 1nt, Plettenberg Bay 2nts.

Transport: Self-drive for the Garden Route plus any connecting flights and transfers for add-ons.

Hotels: Choose to upgrade from Standard to Character, Premium or Luxury hotels.

Optional experience packs - Active pack, Cultural pack, Foodie pack, Once In A Lifetime pack

Inclusions: International flights from London (can be made regional), all transfers, Base experiences, Standard hotels (can be upgraded)

Add-Ons: Franschhoek, Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth, Kruger, Johannesburg, Mozambique (includes additional experiences)

Cost: The 'Guide Prices' changes as you create your bespoke itinerary

Ok so we haven’t been inventive with the name for this one, but can you blame us? Tracing the dramatic south-western coastline of South Africa, the Garden Route makes for one of the most renowned and epic road trips in the world. With the delights of Cape Town, Oudtshoorn and Plettenberg Bay at your fingertips, we’re talking a week-long self-drive to remember.

If you want to take things slower, you can easily extend to 11 nights by choosing the ‘relaxed’ pace, which gives you two extra nights in Cape Town – all the more time to explore its picturesque surrounds – one more sleep in Oudtshoorn’s ostrich-ridden valley and a further day’s play on Plettenberg’s white sands. You’ll have your own car from the outset so that you can really make this trip your own, whilst a minimum of three-star accommodation means you’ll be able to relax in comfort. Should you want to make your trip that much more plush, however, you can upgrade your hotels in the itinerary builder.

The Garden Route itinerary gives you access to all the must-see attractions along the way. Think hop-on hop-off bus tour in Cape Town – the perfect excuse for some daytime drinking in between sightseeing – and exploring some of the world’s best limestone cave formations at Cango, just outside of Oudtshoorn. If that’s not enough, you can add more, such as ticking off the ‘Cultural’ hotspots of Table Mountain and Robben Island, or getting ‘Active’ by whizzing through the Tsitsikamma’s ancient forest on a magical canopy tour.

To extend your trip even further, you can add Franschhoek, the Eastern Cape, Kruger, Johannesburg and Mozambique to your holiday. It’s your call.

Ready to make your friends jealous? Then start planning your trip now. Use the Garden Route as your base itinerary, and away you go.
