The best attractions & experiences in Serengeti

When it comes to observing animals in their natural habitat, you can’t get much better than Serengeti safaris. The park’s diverse habitats are home to a wide range of flora and fauna - everywhere you look you’ll be amazed by a new, exciting encounter. As well as the chance to tick the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) off your list, there’s an abundance of other species to marvel at. Frequently sighted residents include hyenas, warthogs, eland, impala and giraffes, plus more than 500 species of birds.

Serengeti National Park also hosts one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural spectacles. Every year, millions of wildebeest and zebras travel from the south of the park, where hundreds of thousands of calves are born from January to March, and chase the rain towards the Maasai Mara reserve in the north. Following the age-old rhythms of Africa’s seasons, this never-ending race for life is a breathtaking sight to behold.

When you’ve had your fill of wildlife, how about some ancient history? The Olduvai Gorge, located in the eastern Serengeti Plains, is one of the world’s most important archaeological sites and has been pivotal in advancing our understanding of early human existence. Some of the oldest evidence of mankind’s evolution has been found here, including fossilised bones and hunting tools dating back millions of years. Make sure you don’t miss this mind-boggling site.

It’s not time to rest just yet. Enhance your Serengeti experience even further with a visit to a Maasai village. Almost completely untouched by modern life, these semi-nomadic communities welcome visitors to learn about their unique culture. A typical village visit includes a tour of a traditional boma made of mud, sticks and cow manure, a brief dancing ceremony, a look around a local school and the chance to buy some locally-made handicrafts.

If you want to make sure your holiday is unforgettable, simply add an Experience pack to your itinerary. For example, you can take to the skies with a hot air balloon ride if you select our Once in a Lifetime experience. Head over to the itinerary builder to find out more.

Olduvai Gorge

Established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the gorge is more than just a dramatic ravine, but rather one of the world’s most important treasure trove for fossils too. It’s here that the earliest evidence of the existence of human ancestors can be found.
