Why travel should be on your bucket list

We’ve been thinking. What if we put as much effort into creating and actively ticking off our bucket list as we do just thinking about it? We know, we’d be masters and connoisseurs of pretty much everything. Being the habitual creates that we are, it’s easy to let our daily demands, deadlines and responsibilities get in the way of us actually living the bucket list we’ve all been dreaming of. That’s where Meraki Travel comes in - we’re here to tell you to stop dreaming and start living and what better way to start than to add a whole lot of travel onto your bucket list? Opting for more travel means opting for an abundance of new experiences - whether that’s the places you see, the things you do, the food you try or the people you meet, travel offers a little something for just about everyone. Not convinced? Take a read of this article and discover five reasons why travel should be on your bucket list and you’ll be well on your way to creating that envy worthy bucket list you’ve been dreaming about!

Step out of your comfort zone

One of the best things about adding travel to your bucket list is that it can push you right out of your comfort zone. Although this might seem extremely daunting to some of you, with the discomfort of stepping out of your comfort zone comes an incredible sense of achievement and the reward of increased self-confidence speaks for itself. With a number of bucket list destinations and bucket list experiences to choose from, why not start with something that pushes you even just slightly out of your comfort zone and build it up as time goes on? Get yourself snorkelling in Zanzibar and before you know it you’ll be scuba diving 18 metres down in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and trust us, you’ll be the envy of just about everyone back at home!

Learn new skills

With new experiences comes an abundance of new skills to take home with you. Whether that’s learning a new language, learning how to spot a lion in the wild, learning to cook international cuisine or simply learning to better appreciate other cultures, these are the skills you’ll be able to shout about to your friends and family (and on social media obvs) and who knows, these skills could even give you an edge over someone else when applying to a potential job! Seriously, we reckon you’ll stand out from the crowd when you drop in the weird and wacky skills you’ve learned during your travels in your interview! If that’s not enough to convince you, the NHS have even advised that learning new skills can actually improve your confidence, self-esteem and thus your overall mental well-being. If that’s not a reason to add travel to your bucket list we don’t know what will!

Unforgettable memories

No surprises here - adding travel to your bucket list means creating unforgettable memories. Let’s be honest, you’re not going to remember that time you rode a rodeo bull even half as fondly as you’d remember the time you rode a hot air balloon over the Maasai Mara, right? Adding travel bucket list experiences to your agenda means you’ll have some amazing and unforgettable memories to take home with you and to take through the rest of your life with you - think scenic train journeys in Sri Lanka and Canada, The Great Wall of China or floating down the Alleppey backwaters on a houseboat. Yup, we even have a sneaky belief that memories like these can get you through that wet and miserable Monday morning commute!

The food

If a great sense of achievement, learning new skills and making unforgettable memories aren’t enough to convince you to add travel to your bucket list, we’re pretty confident that the food you’ll try along the way will be. Seriously, if there’s anything we can all agree on these days it’s our sheer love for food! We’re a nation that should be proud of our taste in delicious cuisine and what’s better than venturing a bit further to try our fave dishes in their home land? Think authentic curries in Delhi, Chinese street food tours in Beijing, a South African cooking class in Cape Town and a cowboy cookout in Calgary, because seriously, what’s a bucket list without food?

The people

The final reason we think you should add travel to your bucket list is the people you’ll meet along the way. Time and time again when you ask people about their trip, they’ll come back with stories about their incredible guide, the welcoming locals, the other tourists they met along the way and so on. True, the concept of travel in itself is incredible but we believe you’ll rarely find a giggle worthy story that includes just one person! And finally, adding travel to your bucket list is an exciting way to experience other cultures first-hand, appreciate and understand how others live and what’s better than returning home with a new friend to keep in touch with?

At Meraki we believe you’ll always regret the things you don’t do rather than the things you do so in other words, start living that bucket list of yours!
