South Africa with Meraki Travel

Six reasons to travel South Africa with Meraki Travel

It’s one for the adventurous souls. The wine connoisseurs. Wildlife obsessed. Tree huggers. Hiking enthusiasts. History buffs. Culture vultures. Outdoors-y types. Adrenaline junkies. Water babies. Foodies. Shopaholics. And anyone who lives to grab life by the horns.

A country that will have you charmed from the off, ‘liking’ South Africa simply isn’t an option. This destination will have you falling in love.

Take in its myriad delights with Meraki and you won’t look back. We’ve made sure that every which way that you could possibly want to see this vast and varied country is covered. And we don’t mean to blow our own trumpets, but sometimes – just sometimes – it’s necessary.

So, here’s why you should travel to South Africa with us.

1. Itineraries curated by us and chosen by you

It’s a point that we keep selling to you, but we’re going with it again. South Africa offers an overwhelming amount for its visitors to enjoy which is why we want to make sure that you get to tick off all the bits that you want to see. Our two base itineraries – Classic and Garden Route – will be your starting point, and from there it’s up to you. What better way to make your choice than to be met with all of the options out in front of you. Will it be the country’s wild interior or its wondrous coastline that wets your appetite? Have a little read, click a few buttons and voilà. Before you know it, a South African adventure is on the horizon.

2. “Package” holidays for the trendy traveller

Forget the Canary Islands, we’re talking South Africa without the faff. Why should you have to spend hours on the phone to a sales consultant, or make various bookings on a number of different websites just because you want to travel long-haul? Your backpacking days are well and truly behind you – hostels are great and all, but you’d rather not rough it on your hols anymore – and these days, knowing that everything is sorted before you get there seems slightly more appealing. So, with Meraki able to sort your flights, hotels, experiences, transfers and driver (or car hire if you’re going for the Garden Route) all in one place, you’ll have more time to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Yep, we’ve got your back.

3. Accommodation to suit all budgets

With the ability to choose your level of hotel from four different types, the holiday really becomes your own. We know that some people see accommodation as simply being somewhere to rest your head, whilst for others, hotels are part and parcel of the travel experience. Whether you go for a standard staple, small boutique, plush premium or all out luxury, we’ve sifted through the best of South Africa’s stock so that you don’t have to.

Standard: Aha Bongani Mountain Lodge in Kruger

Inspired by their safari setting in Kruger National Park, these lodges marry warm terracotta tones with a subtle blend of timber and thatch, to provide you with a comfy retreat from the surrounding African bush.

Boutique: Leeu House in Franschhoek

With just 12 rooms, this boutique stay is both private and personal. Think decadent furnishings, delectable dining and a pool with a view – as well as a bar – sat directly upon Franschhoek town’s inviting high street.

Premium: Spier Hotel in Stellenbosch

From its farm-to-table food to its pretty pool area, the Cape Winelands’ Spier Hotel combines contemporary comforts with an idyllic setting in Stellenbosch to create an unforgettable experience.

Luxury: Table Bay in Cape Town

Located in the midst of the sought-after V&A Waterfront, a stay at the Table Bay is quite something. An impressive facade, mountain and harbour views, and elegant rooms make this one of the top places to stay in Cape Town.

4. Location, location, location

…the possibilities are endless. Because, at Meraki – in case you haven’t noticed already – we’re all about choice. So, perhaps the Garden Route has been on your to-do list for, like, ever. But you also want to get the Winelands in too. Oh, and you’ve never done a safari. See what we mean about there being so much to do here? But the beauty is that you can do it all. Use our interactive map or have a play with the buttons in the itinerary builder to chop and change your route until you’re happy with the locations that make up your tour. And, as if that wasn’t enough, you can milk the holiday for all its worth by opting for ‘relaxed’ pace, which will give you longer in each location to savour the sights.

5. “Nothing ever becomes real 'til it is experienced.”

And we can’t help but agree with Keats – after all, he wasn’t one of Britain’s best poets without reason. It’s not enough to just visit a place. You want to get to grips with it, right? Throw yourself into all of its offerings. Immerse yourself in the local ways. And there’s no better way to do so than by experiencing the country, which is why Meraki provides a number of South African experiences already included in your trip – they’re your base – as well as tailor-made add-ons to match your interests.

If you’re going on a safari, a game drive goes without saying which is exactly why we’ve taken this want as a given. In both Kruger and the Eastern Cape, guided game drives are included in your ‘base’ package. Yep, that means that we’ve sorted the Big 5 for you. We really are that good.

Planning on diving into South Africa’s outdoor adventures? Opt for our ‘active’ pack and you’ll get to hike to the top of Lion’s Head for the best 360 views that Cape Town has to offer, whilst in Hermanus you’ll be sea-kayaking in waters frequented by a whole host of incredible marine life, including the elusive southern right whale.

For the thrill-seekers planning on taking in Hermanus’ myriad delights, one push of the ‘adrenaline’ button will see you submersed in the shark-ridden waters of nearby Gansbaai on a great white shark cage dive, all organised and taken care of by us. It’ll get your blood pumping that’s for sure.

6. We provide the goods

You’re in this corner of the world already and you’ve got a thing for crossing off the world’s wonders. Victoria Falls is so close, you can almost touch it. So what’s stopping you? We’re all about the bucket-lists, get it ticked off now! Just because you’re limited to a few weeks annual leave shouldn’t mean that you’re restricted to holidaying in one destination at a time. We’ve collated the best bits of southern Africa so that you can do a bit of country hopping while you’re there.

Victoria Falls

The natural phenomenon of Victoria Falls is one of those landmarks that you simply have to see in person to be able to truly wrap your head around its sheer beauty. Just a few hours away on a plane from where you’ll already be, surely taking in this sight is now or never? Go on, you know you want to.

Mozambique

It’s underrated, little-travelled and rarely discussed as a travel destination – which is exactly why we love it. All the white sands and azure waters clichés rolled into one, Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago is what desert island dreams are made of. Stick this destination onto the end of your South Africa adventures for a sumptuously secluded dose of vitamin D.

Mauritius

South Africa’s beaches are pretty beautiful, but with so much else to do whilst you’re there, you may find yourself short on sun soaking time. That’s where Mauritius comes in. Its idyllic setting screams out for days spent on the sugar-white shores, whilst its colourful cuisine and character distinguish this from your average boring beach destination.
