Did someone say Rocky Road Trip?
At Meraki, we’re big advocates of the Canadian self-drive holiday simply because we know how much you’re going to want to pull over and explore when you’re continuously faced with jaw-dropping scenery like that of Western Canada. This is exactly why we’ve created a Canada road trip itinerary across The Rocky Mountains, created with all the best stopovers you’d expect to be there but with the flexibility of self-drive and the ease that comes with a package holiday. This itinerary will see you travel from Calgary’s cowboy meets cosmopolitan culture onto the world famous and picturesque Banff and Jasper National Parks and along the iconic Icefields Parkway before heading to the enchanting Sun Peaks and ending your trip in vibrant Vancouver. And if you really want to make it the ultimate two week West Canada itinerary, you’ll have the opportunity to add on a few days in charming Victoria and scenic Whistler. Sounding good?
Days 1-2 : Calgary
Your Rocky Road Trip will begin in cosmopolitan Calgary where you’ll have the freedom to do whatever you want on your first two days. This city is known for its famous Calgary Stampede, it’s up and coming bars, restaurants and boutiques and it’s intriguing landmarks which will be sure to keep you busy during your time there. That being said, Calgary is most commonly known as the gateway to Banff National Park and this is where it really gets good – it’s officially time to switch from Calgary’s hustle and bustle to the complete tranquillity that is Banff National Park and get introduced to scenery that is simply to die for.
Days 2-4 : Banff National Park
If we can give you one piece of advice for the rest of this trip, it’s to get your cameras at the ready. This place is all about the views. Famous worldwide for its incredibly beautiful scenery, it’s picturesque town and abundance of wildlife, Banff has more than 4 million visitors worldwide each year and it’s really not hard to see why. On your Rocky Road Trip, you’ll enjoy two whole days here to discover the sights of glassy Lake Louise, hike or chillax until your heart’s content. And the best thing about this itinerary? You’ll get your experiences included too – does a gondola ride up to the pinnacle of Sulphur Mountain sound good? Of course it does! You’ll enjoy incredible views of Banff’s vibrant blue lakes, sweeping mountain views and dense forests from a completely different perspective. And if you thought that sounds good, Banff is just a taster of what you’re about to experience.
Days 4-6 : Jasper National Park
Next up it’s time to drive from Banff to Jasper National Park and trust us, you’re in for a treat on this one. Introducing Icefields Parkway, arguably one of the most beautiful road trips in the world. This 200 km stretch of road is brimming with incredible scenery from start to finish – you’ll encounter over 100 ancient glaciers along the route including gushing waterfalls, vibrant blue lakes, snow covered mountain peaks and dense pine forests. And the flexibility of this self-drive itinerary will ensure you have the opportunity to stop off at as many of Icefields Parkway’s most beautiful spots as you wish. Days 6-7 : Sun Peaks
If you’d prefer to keep the flexibility of self-drive, your next stop after Jasper will be Sun Peaks. Known for its snow-blanketed mountains in winter and its landscape of wildflower colour in the summer, Sun Peaks is a great place to stop and take it easy half way through your two week Canada road trip. This enchanting town is primarily used as a skiing hub in the winter but is also popular for it’s beautiful hiking opportunities, small cafes and restaurants and it’s abundance of photogenic colourful buildings.
Days 7-11 : Vancouver
Next up on your West Canada road trip, it’ll be time to leave the gorgeous scenery and head for the bright lights of Vancouver. You’ll have a good few days here to get to know the city and it’s good news all round because you’ll also get a hop-on hop-off bus admission ticket to ensure that you see all that’s worth seeing in this vibrant city. As you’ll have your own car, we recommend you venture further and discover Vancouver’s charming neighbourhood villages and towns including picturesque Gastown, the beachfronts of Kitsilano and the boutiques of Main St.
Days 11-14 : Whistler or Victoria
If you wish, you can stop here and keep this itinerary at 11 days long. Or, if you really want to experience the ultimate two week Canada road trip, you can add on a stop in Whistler and/or Victoria. If you feel as though you haven’t quite got your fill of breath-taking scenery, Whistler is definitely the place to visit - it’s about as quintessentially Canadian as it gets with breath-taking scenery, outdoor activities galore and sweeping mountain views. Or, if instead you fancy something a bit different to the rest of your Canada itinerary, opt for a visit to Victoria.
