Tailor Made Holidays to Munnar

Time to get out and about. This one’s for the outdoors-y types, the wildlife photographers or those who just want a bit of a break from dusty Indian cities.

Munnar is one of Kerala’s hill stations, surrounded by lush green tea plantations and gushing waterfalls. As you wind your way round the hairpin bends that bring you up to Munnar, you’ll feel the air begin to freshen and the temperature begin to cool – a welcome break from the incessant Indian heat.

The town of Munnar is much like any other hill station: a small collection of steep, traffic-clogged roads, with shops selling tea, and tourist information centres. But you don’t come to Munnar for the town – you come for its surroundings.

So swap your flip-flops for hiking boots and get outside. During your Munnar tour, you can trek through the tea plantations, visit the nearby national park or simply enjoy the view while munching on a delicious Indian picnic.

Everyone loves a cuppa. Here, you’ll be able to see how tea is grown, picked and exported from India. It’s also the perfect place to pick up different types of tea to take home. See if you can push the boat out and move beyond that English Breakfast fave.

So whether you’re an active go-getter or just want to cool off a bit, Munnar’s a great place to experience.

A trek through the tea plantations is one of the best things to do in Munnar - and for good reason. Expect rolling hills of a vibrant green, interrupted only by the workers in their colourful saris. But if long walks aren’t for you, and you’d rather just put your feet up and see the scenery, that's no problem. Come along for a delicious picnic, sample some Indian treats and take in that perfect view.

If you still haven’t had enough of the cuppa, take a tour of Munnar’s Tea Museum. Here you can delve deep into the process of tea making, from planting and picking to pouring that perfect cup. There’s plenty of opportunity for taste tests – and even more for souvenir buying should you feel the need. The museum also provides a pretty good history lesson of Munnar and explains its colonial past.

If you’re stuck on what to to in Munnar next, why not grab your binoculars and head out to Eravikulam National Park? This protected area of land is home to several rare species of animal, birds and butterfly. But the endangered Nilgiri tahr steal the show – a rare type of wild mountain goat that you’ll see balanced precariously upon the cliffs.

For yet more picturesque views, head to Mattupetty Dam. Surrounded by hills, blanketed in thick, green forest, the dam and its lake are the perfect spot to get in some more walking, or just to sit back with a book and relax.
