Marine Drive

It’s seems unlikely that a six-lane concrete highway in South Mumbai should have earned its place as one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions, but, as the saying goes, it’s a funny old world. Joking aside, it’s obvious as soon as you set eyes (or foot) on Marine Drive why it’s up there with the best. Shoreside boasts the fading glamour of 1920s art deco buildings – many still command an impressive price on the property market – while the coastline, around which Marine Drive curves in an almost perfect ‘C’, shimmers and shines, and is dotted with swaying palms. It was built on reclaimed land in 1920 (hence the architecture), looking out on the Arabian Sea, and connects Nariman Point in the south to the foot of Malabar Hill in the
southwest. This charming boulevard sweeps past the popular Chowpatty Beach, which is famous for its bazaars and street food – the perfect excuse to stop and browse.

Why add Marine Drive to your itinerary

It’s said (and for what it’s worth, we concur) that Marine Drive is best seen in the evening and at night, when the twinkling lights strung along the entire coastline blaze into life. Indeed, this is what gives Marine Drive its nickname – the Queen’s Necklace – because the lights look like a string of pearls when seen from above or from a distance. Best experienced on foot, the 3km or so road is the perfect place to mix with with locals and visitors alike. It’s hard to imagine a better place to watch a sunset, or take a romantic stroll. Not to be missed.

Seeing Marine Drive for yourself couldn’t be easier, simply select our Ultimate Tigers base itinerary or click the 'Beach Escape' button to add Mumbai and Goa to our Golden Triangle & Tigers or Taj, Raj & Tigers itineraries.
