It’s a cliché but, with so much to do, you won’t have a minute to waste. You might not be into traipsing round historical monument after historical monument, but you should definitely see Humayan’s Tomb. This epic resting place for Moghul Emperor Humayan towers above you at 300ft and, to give you a sense of how old and awe-inspiring it is, it was the inspiration for the Taj Mahal. Wander round in the evening and the imposing caramel building will really start to glow in the golden light.
Must-sees also include the five-storey Qutub Minar, the Red Fort – where Mughal emperors used to reside – and India Gate, a lookey-likey of the Arc de Triomphe. Special mention to the Lotus Temple – somewhere between serene floating flower and Star Wars-esque space ship, it’s unlike any temple you’ll have seen before. Worth it for the photo op.
If you’re a serial shopper, you’ll love Chandi Chowk. It’s one of the largest wholesale markets in the whole of Asia, a bustling hubbub of stalls, shops, eateries and – most of all – people. But it needn’t be overwhelming – with a professional guide, you can drink up the culture (and the chai) without worrying about getting completely and utterly lost. A night walk around the market is something else.
For a breather (and some fresh air), head over to Lodhi Gardens. You can spend hours wandering around the 15th century tombs, picnicking in the beautifully kept grounds or perusing the flower beds and herb gardens. Believe me, you’ll be grateful for a well-earned rest, and you can even get in an hour’s sunrise yoga in the specially designated yoga area if you’re keen.
