Banff Gondola

When it comes to awe-inspiring mountain views, you can’t get much better than those offered by the Banff Gondola. It’s one of the most popular attractions in Banff National Park - and it’s easy to see why. From the gondola base, you’ll be taken on a breathtaking journey over the treetops with views of six glorious mountain ranges and the picturesque Bow Valley.  The eight-minute journey culminates at 698m at the Sulphur Mountain summit, where an unforgettable mountaintop experience awaits.

At the peak you’ll find a cutting-edge complex with interactive exhibits, top-class restaurants, a multi-sensory theatre and a panoramic viewing platform. Of course, the main selling point here are the mountain views - if you’re looking to amp up your Instagram, you’ve come to the right place. For those who are feeling adventurous and want to go all out to get that perfect shot, there are plenty of scenic walks and hiking trails to explore. The most popular route is the boardwalk to Sanson’s Peak, which was named after Norman Sanson, who was one of the first pioneers to climb the mountain in 1896. In fact, he made the three-mile hike more than 1000 times throughout his life until the age of 84. If that’s not dedication, we don’t know what is.

Luckily, you don’t have to don your snowshoes like Sanson to enjoy the wonders of Sulphur Mountain today (though you can still climb it). Sit back, relax and enjoy the views from the comfort of the glass-encased gondola and look forward to more alpine adventures at the top.

Why add Banff Gondola to your itinerary

Banff Gondola offers the ultimate mountaintop experience. From the scenic eight-minute ride to the 360° views from the top, you won’t be short on memorable moments. Soak up the views of the majestic Rocky Mountains and the Bow Valley below as the gondola climbs higher and higher up the mountain. Keep your eyes peeled for grizzly bears grazing in the valleys below.

When you reach the summit, you’ll be greeted by a huge glass complex filled with exciting activities.

Re-fuel with a quick snack or a slap-up meal at the Sky Bistro, get hands-on in with the exhibitions and visit the Above Banff Theater for a multi-sensory, eagle’s-eye experience. Head outside to the rooftop observation deck for unparalleled panoramic views of the mountainscape. If you visit on an evening during the weekend, there’s the chance to enjoy an unforgettable stargazing experience. There’ll even be a professional photographer on hand to help you capture a perfect night-sky shot.

Fancy yourself as a bit of an explorer? Walk across the Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk for even more spectacular vistas and to learn more about the history of Banff National Park. The boardwalk takes you to Sanson’s Peak, where you can follow in the footsteps of the legendary mountaineer Norman Sanson and visit the Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station, a designated National Historic Site of Canada. And if you’re feeling particularly daring you can try the South East Ridge Trail which runs along the ridge of the mountain to the highest summit.

To enjoy the jaw-dropping views from the Banff Gondola, select the Fly-Drive Western Canada option as your base itinerary, which includes a stop off in Banff National Park. Go to our itinerary builder now to start creating the perfect tailor-made trip.
